David Tong: Lectures on Theoretical Physics

Concepts in Theoretical Physics

This course provides an overview of theoretical physics, aimed at first year undergraduates. It was lectured together with Natalia Berloff and Neil Turok in the Spring of 2008 and 2009. Powerpoint slides of the lecture notes are included.

[Time]

Dynamics and Relativity

This is an introduction to Newtonian Mechanics and Special Relativity. It was presented to first year undergraduates in the winter of 2012. Full lecture notes are included.

[Lagrange Points]

Classical Dynamics

This course deals with the Lagrangian and Hamiltonian approaches to classical mechanics. It was presented to third year undergraduates in the fall of 2004 and 2005. Full lecture notes are included.

[Philosophy]

Statistical Physics

This course is an introduction to statistical mechanics and thermodynamics, presented to final year undergraduates in the winter of 2011 and 2012. After developing the fundamentals of the subject, the course covers classical gases, quantum gases and phase transitions. Full lecture notes are included.

[K+]

Quantum Field Theory

This is an introductory course in quantum field theory, presented to first year graduate students in the fall of 2006 and 2007. It covers the canonical quantization of scalar, Dirac and vector fields. Full lecture notes and videos are included.

D-Branes

String Theory

This course provides an introduction to string theory, presented to first year graduate students in the spring of 2009 and 2010. It covers the bosonic string and the basics of conformal field theory. Full lecture notes are included.

[Vortex]

Solitons

This is a course for advanced graduates students, covering solitons in supersymmetric gauge theories and D-branes. It was given at the TASI summer school, 2005. Lecture notes are included.
